Hidden Compartment Match Safe
How interesting is this wonderful match safe having a hidden compartment for a portrait?
In order to open the compartment, the match safe top has to be in the open position and the compartment flips down on one side. It contains no portrait and I believe the backing is original.
There are empty cartouches on both sides with lovely scrolling and a flower on each side under each cartouche.
It is hallmarked Empire Art Silver which was a division of E. J. Bass, N. Y. and were in business from 1890 - 1930. I am not positive if this is sterling or silver plate as they were known to make both.
It measures approximately 2 1/4" x 1 1/2" and weighs 22 grams. The condition is very good - the cover closes well. There are no dents or dings but it could use a professional polishing however I prefer the old patina.
