Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers, in recognition of its members’ pioneering military service, devotion to duty, and many acts of valor in the face of adversity.
Composed primarily of Hispanic soldiers, the U.S. Army 65
th
Infantry Regiment of Puerto Rico was the last segregated unit of the U.S. military. Though restricted to noncombat roles during World War I, the regiment served heroically on the battlefields of World War II and Korea. As the regiment sailed to Asia in September 1950, members of the unit informally decided to call themselves the “Borinqueneers,” a term derived from the Taίno word for Puerto Rico meaning “land of the brave lord.”
The regiment participated in some of the fiercest battles from 1950 to 1952, earning the admiration of many, and dispelling negative stereotypes and reservations about its fighting experience. By 1953, the regiment was fully integrated.
In April 1956, as part of the reduction in forces following the Korean War, the regiment was officially deactivated. In all, approximately 61,000 Puerto Ricans served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, the majority were part of the 65
th
Infantry Regiment.

features the obverse design of the Congressional Medal, depicting a portrait of a fictional Borinqueneer. The soldiers in the background are in an inverted “V” formation, taking the high ground with fixed bayonets during an assault on the enemy during the Korean War. The inscriptions are “65

The Tribute Set Cancellation Stamp.
Purposely made for use this time only, It consists of the Borinqueneers Crest, with its phrase "Honor & Fidelity/Faithfulness," and reads "Borinqueneers Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony Station, April 26, 2016, El Morro, San Juan, Puerto Rico, zip code 00901  (A previous tribute took place April 13 in Washington D.C., this one was for the living Vet's extended families and for those Veterans who, due to their perilous health, could not be flown to the US Capital). It was originally intended to be black ink, but then switched to blue to make it aesthetically different from the black/white crest already printed next to the flag.
The Tribute Set Envelopes
feature the Coat of Arms of Puerto Rico, its flag, and the Borinqueneers crest, based on the Holy Cross carried by the Crusaders of old in their quest to freed Jerusalem from medieval Islamic Terrorists. Below is the famous depiction of the Borinqueneers bayonet charge in subzero conditions against a larger force weathering the storm, unaware of the upcoming assault. It reads the now legendary order to "Fix Bayonets." Below is a printed depiction of the Congressional Gold Medal on its obverse and Reverse, flanking a box that translates to: "These guys won us the respect and equal rights we now enjoy through bullets and guts" Then below, a long line reads, translated to: "Because Freedom in not Free. No one knows just how much valuable democracy is, until he/she looses it" The envelope with the blue stamp features serial number in silver color at the back; the envelope with the fushia stamp features serial number in bronze color at the back.
These First Day Covers will only be sold as a set. Their envelope reverses are serially numbered and each set will contain envelopes carrying the same number. EACH FIRST DAY COVER COMES INSERTED IN AN ACID FREE / PHILATELIC QUALITY PLASTIC SLEEVE FOR PROTECTION, and at NO additional charge.
